about

Kirsten Starcher is outside in the sun.

Kirsten is glad that the World Wide Web came along when it did. Growing up in St. John's, Newfoundland, she found herself equally drawn to both creative and technical pursuits. Initially she gave the technical side more weight: she studied computer science, receiving her B.Sc. from Memorial University of Newfoundland and her M.S. from SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island, NY. But she took the opportunity to pursue her creative side as well, studying creative writing, computer art, music and multimedia. The emergence of the Web just as she graduated gave her the chance to combine all her interests into one career.

After her studies, Kirsten began working at New York City-based thoughtbubble productions. Throughout the dot-com boom, she was involved with every aspect of web development - from concept and development to site design and production, through to strategic placement and promotion. She designed and built sites and CD-ROM presentations for entertainment clients, advised on and developed content, and managed a team of designers and developers.

In 2000, she left a management role at thoughtbubble in favor of a hands-on production role at Millennium Communications in Syosset, NY. Millennium gave her the opportunity to fine-tune her Flash, Director and HTML skills. During her time there, she focused on creating interactive Flash games and efficient, fast-loading sites for sweepstakes and promotions.

Kirsten moved to Vancouver, Canada in the summer of 2002. Inspired by the natural beauty of this region and all it has to offer, she established outside in the sun productions to continue her work. Her portfolio and experience has led to a continuing series of projects with the University of British Columbia in online learning, social software and web accessibility. She is also involved in both business and performance aspects of the Vancouver music industry.

While outside in the sun, she uses a high SPF sunscreen.
